Chelsea reject a 7.9m offer from Inter Milan for Frank Lampard. It was too much.

Absent for the last three weeks in the winter of Oz, I never had an opportunity to indulge myself in the bish-bosh crash-bang-whallop action of Euro 2008. The only thing of me that gets up at 4.30am isn’t interested in watching the television. Still, saw some Aussie Rules football in a 100 Thou capacity stadium, and pom-poms are always amusing.

I’ve missed out on three Molly matches in that time, with the usual mixed results – the close victory, the close defeat and the flat-on-our-ass whitewash. But I was back to play the numbers game against the teams of Club 85, and 86 FC.

Club 85 have no heritage in this league. Black bag op parachute dropped behind this league’s lines, shooting backs with bare resistance. Too good even for the hardened bastards of this division, more used to dishing out the donkey punches than receiving them, Club 85 are miscast like Christian Ronaldo aboard Amistad.

Having developed a fearful rep, it was the Mollys turn to get the Club 18-30 hangover. There’s a division of opinion amongst us about whether the team played well in their 17-4 defeat. But only one of us is typing this shit right now. We were completely outclassed by a seven strong team capable of interchangability (although the grumblings of irregular subbing could be heard). Their movement and use of passing angles; their on the fly shooting and their disciplined formation pulled us apart like buttered toast.

On the plus side, we managed to hold them to 2-1 in the first first five minutes. We scored three good goals, and made one of their keepers spill a fourth into his own net, yet as the keepers were playing old school gloveless, you wonder why we didn’t sting their pinkies some more. Leo managed to scoop a magnificent shot onto and over the roof of the Goals building, and Matt turned in a man of the match performance to keep the score to table-tennis low. Oh, and note to self - never listen to Steve’s tactical advice - never works.

So to 86 FC. In recent times, these boys have had the better of us for reasons still to be determined by an independent tribunal. Either we’ve had an off day or lacked the right personnel, but there was no evidence on this showing that they could claim to be better than us. The first game of the season against them resulted in a close 9-8 defeat, even with Nathan absent and Leo in goal, but with the key players back in the correct places and big Mike back to add muscle, this looked a more balanced side.
This match report has self-destructed.
