Match 14 (season 5) vs. The Elite

4/6/08 7.00pm
Leo, Alan 2, Nathan 4, Gareth 9, Adam, Don

Won 15-9

I’ve been away for a while, and a lot can happen in a month. Not only is it the end of the real world football season, and the end of the Mollyverse football season, but it’s the start of the summer, with all the monotony of England-less Euro 2008, and the lobotomy of lesser England Big Brother.

I’ve managed to finally drag myself back to my computer, waded my way through the corpses of young stab victims that seem to litter our streets in recent times, to bang out a thorough season closer report that leaves no loose ends, no cliff-hangers. It’s the talent that Lungboy’s got – Britain’s talent appears to be knife throwing.

A month ago saw a Molly Maguires double-header against two bottom teams, which had the result inevitability of an English and Champions League double fixture.

The first match against Sholy Hit was a complete basket case of a contest. The first half was the keel-over gut punch, the second half, a beat-em up air juggling combo. Once the flat match ball had been sent into quarantine beyond the green wire caging, and the sun in our eyes had become the sun on our backs, the 3-pin attack of Mike (jnr), Nathan and Gareth, plugged into Sholy Hit’s brittle coated orifices, and blew the holy shit out of them. Not even Matt’s hapless, incestuous passing to his cousin’s dog’s stepsister’s owner’s boyfriend on the opposition, nor Alan’s bad foot day, inability to control the ball, pass cleanly, and his shucking fit shooting, stopped the Mollys from recording one of the highest victories in their history.

The second game of this hot twin lesbian sex scenario was a less showy, but no less deserved victorious display. The seven o’clock start presented the usual logistical turning up on time problems, and forced the scenario of starting the game with just three Molly outfield players, as Gareth, Alan and Leo formed a chain-link formation across the pitch width, Kabadi-style. Clearly intimidated by our confidence in not delaying kick-off, Could Be Worse FC, couldn’t have been any worse in making their numerical advantage count. We played a defensive, slow paced, let Gareth counter-attack style that easily proved their equal. Despite the wet referee (Molly players know who I’m talking about) openly confessing to awarding two dubious penalties, one for us, and then against, in order to “make things even”, wii fittingly held our balance on the score line to 3-3 by the time Adam arrived. Then we went 4-3 down. Nathan showed up a few minutes after that. Then we went 5-3 down. Despite our attritional tactics going to the wall once we’d got back to full strength, we did enough in the second half to win in misplaced and sluggish comfort.

Two weeks of non-playing followed, due in part to the Battle of England in Moscow (anyone else receive an MMS of a fat Manc fan in a ruskie hat?) making the team itchy, like ball sacks, to get back on the pitch for this final game of the season.

With Matt spending his birthday in Cuba, presumably a special treat from Mr Gooding Jnr. himself, it was left to Leo to hold aloft the mystical man-purse above his head, “By the power of Gayskull!” transforming from defensive lynchpin to goalkeeping icon. A team of five was quite literally scrapped together for what was anticipated to be a white-knuckle free falling nose-dive of end-to-end action.

With five minutes to kick-off, it was touch and go whether we’d have to start with just three outfield players again – one of whom would be Don, boy scout ready in his blues. Luckily we had our twin strike force up front, with the double A in defence from the get go, with Don proving a vital substitute for a squad three weeks rusty. Ironically, the team would yet again experience an outfield of three early into the match, with a historic, unprecedented Molly Maguires sin-binning. Would Adam’s deliberately shoulder charging finally get the punishment it deserved?

So before either team had a meaningful attempt at anything, Gareth rips past his opposite number down the right wing, unleashes a goal ward shot and then gets smashed against the boards like a thunder crack. As Gareth gets up and gives him a WTF? gesture, there is then what they call a ‘coming of foreheads’, and what appeared to be The Elite’s player pushing toward Gareth – you know, just like when Premiership players dance around each other like rutting stags, in that pussy pseudo head butt but not head butt way.

What then follows is the cute female referee telling the naughty boys off for being childish, threatening them with a metaphorical spanking if they continue such behaviour, and promptly sending them both off for a cool off in the sin-bin. Yeah, you heard right – Gareth got blue-balled by a girl (I think that’s what they call it). It took Gareth a few seconds to realise that he had actually been given his marching orders, but it took me at least two minutes after play had re-started before I realised that we were suddenly down to three outfield, as my bullish shout to “make our extra man count” will testify (damn my eyes). What should have been a run of the mill end of season battle for fifth place turned into a super-charged battle for pride and revenge.

Both teams of three played a cagey possession game, broken first by an awful and obvious back pass from Adam, a mistake that Leo compounded by letting run past him into a baying net. For gawd’s sake Leo, touch the ball, save the shot, concede the penalty, save the penalty. Not give the opposition a stinking cheap lead. Still we continued to fight back, shots getting rammed at their opposition keeper, and the spoils were shared 3 a-piece, by the time the kids were allowed off the naughty step.

Formation-wise, the Mollys were easily outclassing The Elite. Don on the pitch meant a rooted defender, but both Adam and Alan were curtailing their usual forays into dead ends, defending stoutly. Yet Leo faced too frequently one on ones, handled significantly better then the slashing cross shots from the right wing into the side netting, that his positional and diving skills were incapable of keeping out.

Still, upfront the Mollys were dragging their opposite numbers around, our dribbling skills easily outclassing theirs, frequently leaving markers in the wake, and using the numbers advantage in counter-attack. With momentum, and the ball rolling, The Elite were capable of passing beyond our back line; from a standing start, they got tackled and turned over frequently. At one point, there were four Elite players all gathered around the right hand side of their goal - the very definition of ‘schoolboy tactics’.

Nathan was lucky not to face a ‘blue card’ himself when an unpunished handling by their keeper outside the D, resulted in him terrorising the stunned ref with a “YOU’RE FUCKING SHIT!” Perhaps craving some discipline himself, it can only be a matter of time before ‘female referee’ joins the fantasy pantheon alongside ‘naughty schoolgirl’ and ‘sexy nurse’. Have Nuts done a pullout special yet?

The first half finished six-all, the lead changing hands throughout, but the Mollys were going to turn it up to 11 in the second half, as tiredness, frustration and substitution unbalancing were The Elite’s undoing. Throw in Leo finally getting his grip together in the shade of the other end, and Gareth turning on the style so much that the facet broke and flooded the pitch, and the Mollys were about to skull crack their way through the opposition’s brain.

It was a shattering exercise, but the Mollys had more reserves of energy to call upon in the second half. The right wing suddenly became a more open option, as the team played a higher line. Alan started to be all over the pitch width, as the team pressed forward to end the contest and begin the humiliation. The shot-blocking was better, still desperately last second, but very rarely was anything but soft balls bouncing toward and off Leo’s gloves. Our keeper’s throw outs were still dreadfully shy of their renowned pacey long range quality, as the opposition remained tight to their opposite number, but this just gave a blank cheque to Nathan and Gareth to scribble ‘catch me if you can’ all across their man-markers. Facing goal in his own half, Gareth set about humbling the opposition with a succession of running dribbles the entire length of the pitch, before performing drive-by shootings past their about to be flat-on-his-ass keeper.

Most Molly goals were direct drilled shots straight down the keeper’s throat, as some neat tackling and short range passing allowed the frontmen to get clear beyond what was turning into a ghost of an opposition back line. Even Alan managed to knuckle in a couple, when he decided not to perform that extra touch too many (there’s a sex offender joke in there somewhere).

Adam was actually performing heroics in defence, still more Wonder Woman than Batman, as the Niagara Falls poured down his back and he revelled in the role of last hope in defence. Still he too managed to avoid a high squealed telling off, or a rubbing of foreheads, when he scythed through a opposition number, as Nathan defended his integrity with a shout of “He’s just clumsy!” in the same the way you shout out “He’s just disabled!” when your friend runs over someone’s foot with their wheelchair.

The Mollys broke away with a solid three or four goal lead that couldn’t be breached, despite Leo again getting twice suckered by slashing over ground shots from the right wing. Whatever mistaken belief The Elite had that they could drag themselves back into the match slowly ebbed away and in the end a slightly impressive 15-9 victory was suitable justice for a team, which had a lummox and a pensioner in defence.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes at the always efficiently run Goals centre, a new policy is in place. Clearly bordering on the financial brink, the company have suffered a lack of match fees as of late due to Premiership clubs adventures in the Champions League forcing cancellations. They’ll suffer further that no-one really cares about Euro 08 without England, except those southern Mancs supporting Portugal, Holland and France, not enough to rack up a big bar bill.

The grand new scheme by our host is to reduce the league to six teams, so they can get their rip-off registration fee four weeks early, and to make us contractually promise to turn up. Two cancellations, and “You’re fired!” from the league. Cut. Nose. Spite. Face. It’s all feeling very Community Order to me.

With the team finishing in a respectable and very consistent fourth place, despite only ever having played one game this season with a full squad of seven, next season could well break the team. Does Matt demand a £7 match fee to make a profit to pay the registration? Can we go a whole season with a threadbare squad of players with old and frailness; long distance lateness; child care before dark (yet Alan always manages to get out of the house…); three week holidays abroad? Do we finally move back to Thursday?

It almost feels like Police Academy: Mission To Moscow. Most of the original cast have long since gone since the franchise’s inception (but not necessarily to better things - poor Guttenberg), and you’re left with a man who can make noises with his mouth. Matt is Bobcat. And it’s kinda creepy in an Eastenders way to watch a child star like Gareth grow into a man.

The future may not be bright, but it’s sure to be interesting. Whatever next, indoor cricket on a Sunday evening?

As the chants of “we are staying up” rang around St Mary’s, the misnomer of pitch invasioning the fact that Saints were actually “staying here” in the Crapionship, suggested a final coming to terms of forever life in the second tier. Congratulations.

The Molly Maguires have also become accustomed to mediocrity, nestling safe in inappropriately low cut for work, but hooray for summer, bosom of the middle third of the lowest tier. And whilst Matt does his best to find the team’s way out of the cellar, a lack of resources, and a conspiring of elements, is hampering the team’s development and progress.

The retirement of Dean, the extended leave of absence for Big Mike, and the inexplicable disappearance, save for a possible background sighting in Blood, Sweat and T-shirts, of Nobby (can you Fed-Ex me back that Derren Brown book when you’ve done reading it on the toilet?) has left the team fending for itself with six players for the vast majority of the season. With Matt fretting over his denim man-purse kitty and its lack of contents, and making wild suggestions of increasing subs to £7 a pop to meet the registration fee, the season has been on the verge of imploding.

Last week against 86 FC was a flat, unchallenging, washed out performance, only livened up by Alan offering to clock an opposition player for a blatant ankle smash, right in front of his watching daughter; and Gareth taking his protests directly to the sub-standard referee after the match, who admitted his inability to see Gareth being lifted off the ground with reckless kicks.

This week was little better. It started with Matt mistakenly sending a request for player availability to his own home email, with the kind of technological naivety that allows the FBI to unswirl pictures and organise manhunts in Thailand. As a result the two most reliable members of the squad – Adam and Nathan – were freed up to have some homoerotic adventures of their own, probably whilst dressed up in their ‘Pool and ‘Sea strips, whilst the team on the night were only five men strong.

And whilst Ronaldo got ambushed by only three dick heads, the Mollys had to endure twice that number tonight. This wasn’t a footballing contest (which we would’ve lost anyway), but a sequence of provocations and violent assaults from Testwood FC that went unpunished by a referee, no more successfully trained and approved by the F.A. than attention-seeking Gascoigne is likely to drown himself by pouring a bottle of Becks over his head.

We had actually started at a level pace, returning fire with relative ease, as we tried to sort out our formation, that had so many of our players sitting deep, you could feel the old men’s piles. Indeed at one stage, we’d manage to drag ourselves level to 4-4, before ending the first half about 6-4 down. We never recovered after that. We succeeded in the stamina test, but with every player having to drop off the pace to regain breath, and an attack that had Leo in the pole position, there was only ever gonna be a tonking in the second half. Our aborted attempt at a 2-2 formation didn’t help an iota, and the opposition’s shooting was just too hard and accurate for Matt’s diving range.

The opposition were full of the usual nutjobs, football being a contact sport when it suited them, and yet being incredibly amazed when they were then on the end of said contact. Not surprisingly Gareth was singled out for special treatment as he tried to spin through every outfield player on his way to goal. Not surprisingly Don was shouting his usual ‘watch the arms’ and being told to shut up by the opposition. Yet we arguably played into their hands, trying to rough it up with Testwank FC, when we clearly did not have the bouncibility bulk of Big Mike, or the shoulder-barging expertise of Adam.

The bias bastard referee was making decisions with the same rational thought process that a wealthy Brazilian international uses to pick prostitutes in dark alleyways. Despite our players being kicked into the air more times than the ball, the referee seemed incapable of pulling a blue card (or whatever colour-coded crap they have for sin-binning) out of his pocket. He was more likely to pull a Valentine’s card out of his knickers, or a hand out of his arse. As always there was an especially vocal twat on the opposition team spouting more bollocks than at a Brazilian footballer’s orgy. (Third reference. Yes!) Always incensed when a decision went against him, bawling like a baby denied a boob, this overbearing moron is what’s wrong with the youth of today.

So the game happened. We scored a pocketful of goals, they scored a stolen charity box full of goals. Whatever. This result was simply a following of the pattern for the season. There was still the free £10 bar voucher to use, as Goals’ incentive to stop teams crying off to watch the telly football, whilst Alan talked up the fact he was decked out in West London blue, and forcing Matt to empty the kitty of an extra £3 to cover the difference of five drinks. I swear there was weeping.

Wow, what a great weekend of sport. Firstly, the glowing peal of the victorious Pompey chimes ringing in the ears of their less illustrious neighbours, and then a erroneously discarded ex-Saints manager taking some Welsh team to the Cup final too. The traitor and the betrayed. What delicious irony. And in the same season Southampton get relegated? Lip-smacking goodness. The National was won by a horse with a name that this Service should be falling over buckets to adopt and the weekend also bore witness to the latest sport to make the Olympic roster - the Torch relay tag. Like grid-iron, only over 31 London miles with a combined team of Police and Chinese blockers. Can't wait for The Running Man to become a reality.

Alas, also sad news - the number 7 shirt is permanently retired, as dandy Dean finally "throws his hat into the ring" (according to Matt), and announces the end of his Molly career. Of course, if Beckham can fight past mediocrity to win his 100th cap, there's little reason why our once exalted leader and co-founder couldn't make a similar comeback, once his feet get itchy. You just know he'll be there for Southampton vs Pompey III.

My favourite Dean footballing memory (no, this isn't some lame Soccer AM pastiche) was in a game about three years ago against Benfica Chicken Tikka, a tight 4-4 draw coming into the final minutes, when Deano got a free kick, saw my lightning run down the wing, and weighted a perfect ball onto my two touch toes to rag home the winner, then in spectacular fashion for Dean and I to leap on each other in a manly cuddle, not seen before nor since on a Molly pitch.

My favourite Dean non-footballing memory is of course the legendary Flares incident. For those of us who were there (i.e. me and Robbie) the night is seared into our minds like a laser-scoped shoulder mounted cannon-rifle shot from a Predator.

Back to tonight's game, and with the squad size wilting slightly, there was a six-man team up and ready to face off against Two Left Feet FC. Steve had to pull out at the last minute, but that's another story. He also cried off for tonight's game due to an arm/shoulder injury, and having spoken to him, it was clear that he was struggling to raise his arm, and didn't want to jeoprdise his career as the "you must be this tall to ride" cardboard cut-out for The Pirates Of The Carribbean ride.

Two Left Feet FC were also having squad problems, but whilst we're more used to scrambling around for anyone who can stand up and has a penis, our opposition were able to call on ringers, like an ex-professional Woking player. Something always smells fishy when the opposing team can't even turn up in broadly the same coloured shirts. There's nothing sadder than a footballer who wasn't good enough for the big leagues. No fifty grand a week, no glamour model sex. Yes, I would like a carrier bag, but no, I don't need help packing.

With Pete Doherty finally behind bars after what must have been the most protracted and ineffectual breach proceedings, anything was possible. And so it proved as the night saw the most welcome returning sight as Leo intercepted a long range pass from the opposition keeper, stuffed it right back past him, and celebrated with that 'chalk it up' celebration. Who else on this team can claim to have their own unique goal celebration? Lack of creative thought processes, that's why.

Alas, such merriment had only come along after a shameful display of defensive ineptitude that saw the Mollys adopt a devil may care attitude almost on a par with a stroppy Arsenal backline. Said ex-Woking player ripped us apart in less than five minutes as his pace, and passing ability saw the opposition open up canyons of space, and nail bullet fast shots through the desperate dan style of diving from Matt. We were probably 6 down before we even produced a real opportunity at goal. The shape of the team was all over the Tescos - Leo worthless on the wing, and Alan yet to suck up to his best position, assuming we can work out what it is. Once the opposition eased off with the deserved absurdity of victors, and Nathan had come on to hassle their backline, we finally started to mount a serious attempt at a comeback.

The opposition played predictable triangles with speed, that required tracking back, and once we got to grips with the angles, and were actually there to meet the ball, we started to turn it over, and counter-attack a suspect defensive line. Gareth getting embroiled in a(nother) personal skirmish which ultimately resulted in cramp; a ludicrous penalty given against us {let me ask you this, if the ball is on the line of the D - is it inside the area or outside? Answers scrawled with a knife in the flayed skin of an ignorant referee to the usual address}; and Don's commentary that "Trevez" had scored for Man U, didn't help our cause.

What did aid us was the showboating of that ex-professional, who responded to every mistake he was making (and by the second half he was making a lot) with a variety of expletives at himself, and rather than shoot and give Matt something to cry about, was trying to set everyone else up in his team to score. His lack of ruthlessness allowed us to get a free turn to shoot back, and we easily outgunned them in the second half. Nathan showing better accuracy in front of goal than in previous weeks, and Gareth giving the defenders the option to foul or be left behind, helped the Mollys re-assert themselves into the match that had previously been slipping away (the footballing equivalent of the lightning bolt, Mario fans). The frustration of Two Left Feet at their own failings was tangible.

In the end, it wasn't enough. Alan has misplaced his killer instinct in front of goal; and Robbie was outpaced at the heart of the defence, but that's like saying that night follows day, and water is wet. A final deficit of 14-11 (give or take a mysterious miscalculation by the ref) lay squarely at the feet of our awful first five minutes, when every shot they had kissed the onion bag. A second half collapse come way too early. An end to a match report come just about right.

Game 4 Season 5 - Could Be Worse FC vs. The Molly Maguires

03/26/08 8:30pm
Leo, Steve 3, Robbie, Gareth 4, Nathan 5, Alan 4

WON 7-16

The text message was sent at about five minutes before the scheduled kick-off last night, and whilst most of the Mollys had torn themselves away from another funeral for our national game, with Beckham as guest of honour, Adam was having difficulties. Examining the cell phone evidence without a forensic expert, might lead to misinterpretation, but the general team consensus was that our very own ‘Goldenballs’ was engaged in that pastime commonly referred to as cross-dressing, and had misplaced his heels.

Such role-reversal was also prevalent in our speculation of where exactly Matt and Mike had disappeared to for the evening. Perhaps wary of the low turnout for one of his previous (leaving) dos [I attended, and it’s the benchmark from which I can’t refuse others. The man who comes to take away the confidential waste is having a farewell drink at Junk, you say? I’m there!], the email invites to join Matt on his hen night must’ve got lost in cyberspace (also known as Don’s Inbox). But I bet Donnay Jeff was there.

So with our gaffer celebrating his final days before servitude (and our former self-proclaimed man of the match making similar plans for his self-proclaimed event of the year), it was left to the Swiss army knife of the team, Leo, to step off the plane from JFK Airport, wade through a blaze of Beatles-like mania, and rescue a team short of sure hands. I’m here to kill your monster (I saw Beowulf on the plane).

Thankfully Adam’s drivel excuse absence, but admittedly kind sentiments, and Matt’s night at margaritaville, proved to have absolutely no detrimental impact on the game against the denizens of the bottom of the table. In fact, with the lummox highly likely to have added to his tally tonight, and Robbie turning down the opportunity to sink a penalty, when we were two goals up, and latterly hitting the post, Leo still has a chance to get himself out of this ‘can’t shoot for shit’ stigma he seems to have carved into himself.

The crusade would have to wait. With Robbie operating as primary defender in front of Leo; Alan working the left channel, with the same nostalgic memory as when television only had two channels; Steve defending the centre, and providing the midfield hub; Nathan invading the opposition keeper’s personal space, and Gareth doing his free-for-all sandbox running, this author was never doubting the victorious outcome.

The game itself had the usual packed ingredients in a victory of this size. We played at a level that allowed us a comfortable victory without any real exertion, although the way Robbie kept bending over to touch his toes, I wasn’t clear if he was breathing heavy, or offering himself. The offer was declined.

We put ourselves three nil up before Nathan even stepped onto the pitch, with Leo barely enough time to shout abuse at the lack of defenders on the edge of the area (that would come later), and Gareth even having the audacity to strike the keeper from the penalty spot.

6-2 up at half-time, and not before some lunatic tramp had shouted something about the Frogs being 1-0 up from a penalty in a thick accent that may have been Scottish or something just as ‘simple’, the Mollys hit the nitrous oxide in the second half with complete disregard for the back bumper breaking off and CGI-flying into the camera.

And whilst the first half had a semblance of order about it, the second half was just relentless attacks from both sides, with both teams throwing off the shackles because there was no way they could lose, or no way they could win. The individual Molly performances were pretty much mirrored in both halves, except the space afforded to the attack just meant a higher back line, and Leo was left in a quantum of solace to test his diving skills against two or three opposition strikers at a time.

Leo holds onto shots like he holds onto slippery dicks – he doesn’t (and hasn’t tried). But his parrying style was more than adequate against some very lightweight cushioned shooting from the opposition. No long range belters, the opposition loved to try and dig out that extra yard for the close range shot, and when not frequently blocked by whomever happened to be in the defensive area at that time by sheer coincidence, Leo has happy to chuck himself around. Of course, every keeper gets a couple of clangers, including a parry out straight onto the oppo’s feet, and a miscalculated judgement of dipping body shots, but he accepts no responsibility for Robbie’s own goal.

There had been a discussion between Steve, Robbie and Leo before the match about just that subject, and prophetically Robbie truly delivered his minus one goal for the season. Clearly jealous that everyone was getting on the score sheet but him, Robbie hammered a back pass wide beyond Leo’s despairing dive, that was so ferocious that not even Matt would’ve got to the ball as it rebounded out of the net, let alone in.

Nathan was having his usual tease with the keeper, one minute hammering a shot straight down his throat, the next dinking it round him with smackass aplomb, and also had the usual amount of efforts from impossible winged angles that rose high and wide, as he tried to emulate his hero Kanu from back in the day.

One minute Alan’s complaining that he hasn’t got on the scoresheet, the next he’s opening a can of whup-ass, raking in a quartet of goals, whilst having the seeming disability of wearing what I presume were winkle pickers, the way some of his shots were failing to stay ground-bound. Did we have the ball intercepted in midfield? That was probably Alan’s fault, with the risk-taking crab sideways cross-field pass that flashed before the keeper’s eyes, that against more ruthless teams would get punished, as The Principal attempted to contort his body into impossible positions to get over the ball, with purchase.

Steve took the second penalty that was again cheaply given away, to complete the second hat-trick of his Molly career, and cap a performance of true thinking man’s brilliance. Ladies and gentleman, I present the new Midfield General.

Gareth did what he normally does – either loitering on the right wing, dropping deep to face up the opposition, or ragging down the left wing, with drag backs and all that other posy shit. Frankly, the kid is a constant blur, impossible to focus on, and just does what he does best, with unfettered licence.

The only final comment I really need to pass is mention of the bizarre passing sequence that happened in the second half between the Molly outfield, like the points on a ‘W’ and back again, including a cheeky back-heel, that was possession of the football, bordering on showboating, the likes of which left me almost gob-smacked by its temerity. Of course we then lost the ball, but it was the thought that counts.

A good solid victory against lesser opposition that may as well be basked in, whilst the sun is still shining, and we’re making hay, because the battles get tougher from here on in. With Mike soon to up sticks for newer pastures, the loss of another reliable squad member is a blow, but Alan’s consistent reporting for duties, holds us in good stead, as does Robbie’s more frequent appearances after dark. Now where are my gawd damn shooting boots?
